What was to be Team Michigan turned into Team Everyone as two late substitutions from Montreal joined to carry the team to victory over Team Ontario.
Montreal’s Vincent “Vwins” Jodoin and Roustane “Kage” Benzeguir led the way as Team Everyone took 14 of 20 stocks from Team Ontario in the five-on-five crew battle. The Doubles partners served as late replacements for two Michigan players who were unable to attend No Man’s LAN 10 at St. Clair College this past weekend, joining Michigan’s Kalindi “KJH” Henderson, Robin “Juggleguy” Harn, and James “Duck” Ma to fill out Team Everyone.
Team Ontario consisted of David “KirbyKaze” MacDonald of Thornhill along with Toronto’s Austin “Coffeeblack” Scarlato, Kyle “Idea” Charizanis, Edgard “N0ne” Sheleby, and Camilo “Weon-X” Morales.
Team Everyone applied pressure early as Kage used Ganondorf to take the first set off Coffeeblack, losing only two stock in the process and taking another three off N0ne before finally being eliminated. Juggleguy stepped in for Team Everyone, trading only one stock for N0ne’s last. Weon-X evened the odds for Ontario, knocking off Juggleguy’s three remaining stock while losing only one.
The momentum was short-lived for Team Ontario, as next up for Team Everyone was Vwins. Vwins asserted dominance with Peach, taking Weon-X’s last three stock and going on to defeat Idea while giving only a single stock in return. Team Ontario made a valiant showing to climb back from the deficit they had fallen into, but it would prove too little, too late.
After finally eliminating Vwins, Team Captain KirbyKaze took out KJH with Sheik , leaving himself only one stock entering the final set against Duck. KirbyKaze gave his all, but in the end could not overcome the odds. Duck’s Samus finished off Team Ontario’s final stock, earning the Crew Battle victory for Team Everyone.
KirbyKaze said that Team Ontario’s strategy went out the window after N0ne was unable to take any stock off Kage.
“We thought they were going to lead with Juggleguy, which is why we put in Coffeeblack,” said KirbyKaze. “But they led with Kage, and he took control. We put in N0ne because he’s beaten him in tournaments, but Kage played really well. So then we were in a hole and trying to piece it together. We took a risk in putting in Idea versus Vwins but it just didn’t work out.
Team Everyone’s Kage said they didn’t really have a plan going into the Crew Battle, but knew they would be able to make good counter picks.
“There wasn’t really a strategy,” said Kage. “We just had to expect which character was going to come at you and I think our choices were superior to theirs.”
His doubles partner at the event, Vwins, echoed his statement, saying that he believed Weon-X was going to pick Fox to counter his Peach but ended up going with Marth. Vwins also explained his dominating 4-1 Peach-Jigglypuff set against Idea.
“For me the Peach-Marth match up is really good since I could counter pick him pretty hard,” said Vwins. “Historically Jiggs does very well against Peach, but I’ve been figuring it out lately and that’s why it went super well for me. It’s generally considered the hardest Peach match up. I knew that my new style against Jiggs was going to work pretty well.”
While Crew Battles usually have bragging rights on the line, this matchup felt different for the Montrealers.
“It was for fun,” said Kage. “Usually it’s for pride, but since we were a mixed region it was for a fun experience.”
Shaun Byrne, Co-Founder and CEO of EGE, said that it won’t be the last time EGE hosts a Crew Battle like the one held at St.Clair College and looks to re-revisit a potential Team Ontario versus Team Michigan showdown in the future.
“Hopefully we can re-visit that in the future,” said Byrne. “That would be a really hype match.”
